Just before the Photokina kicks off Nikon introduces a new high-qualitiy compact digital camera with a resolution of 8 Megapixels. A very interesting aspect of this Prosumer digital camera is the versatile 24-85mm (equiv. 35mm) zoom lens! Beside this very interesting zoom range, fast AF and a host of other features can be found within the new Coolpix 8400. With a 24-85mm (35mm equivalent) zoom range, the Nikon Coolpix 8400 offers exceptional wide-angle zoom capability, allowing to capture a wide range of subjects from landscapes to portraits. The Coolpix 8400 allows macro shooting from as close as 3cm. Offering an impressive 8.0 Megapixels, the Coolpix 8400 has the ability to produce images with a very high resolution.

Nikon Coolpix 8400 - Fast auto focus
Furthermore, printing can be carried out without the need for a PC as the Coolpix 8400 offers the direct print convenience of PictBridge. The Coolpix 8400 is also a kind of "system" camera, offering a variety of optional lens converters and other accessories. Fast auto focus makes it easy to capture unexpected moments and the lightweight, high-strength magnesium body enables easy handling in all situations. The addition of a 134,000 pixel Vari-Angle TFT LCD monitor makes it easy to compose shots from above the head, from the waist or other imaginative angles.

Nikon 8400 - D-Lighting
The exclusive Nikon D-Lighting, which can be selected in Playback mode, automatically compensates for insufficient flash or excessive back lighting in order to obtain balanced exposure throughout the frame. Furthermore, the Nikon Coolpix 8400 features Nikon's proprietary Red-eye Reduction that automatically detects and corrects red eyes in-camera in most situations. Compression-free recording is available in the form of RAW (NEF) and HI (TIFF-RGB). There's also a selection of compression modes too, comprising JPEG EXTRA (approx. 1/2) that offers a satisfying balance of quality and data efficiency, FINE (approx. 1/4), NORMAL (approx. 1/8) and BASIC (approx. 1/16).

Nikon Coolpix 8400 - TTL flash capbility
Beside being able to capture a high-end image the Coolpix 8400 offers also continuous shooting and recordings of TV-sized video clips with sound and a smooth rate of 30fps. It even compensates the effects of any movement that takes place during the shooting! This new model is the first to offer TTL flash capability when used with external SB-800 and SB-600 Speedlights. Another new interesting feature is auto colour management that combines new high-end Nikon technologies with the recorded image to offer a result that is the most attractive end-result. This new model has a high potential of creativity. Numerous converter lenses, including wide-angle and telephoto converter lenses can be used to enlarge the optical range and broaden the creative opportunities. The new Nikon Coolpix 8400 is scheduled for release in October 2004.
