At the Pentax booth visitors were able to get their hands on the latest DSLR from Pentax - *istDS. This very compact, lightweight body is an entry-level digital SLR camera that is designed to be as user-friendly as possible. The *istDS is one of the smallest and lightest digital digital SLR cameras on the market today - even more compact and lightweight than the PENTAX *istD. The resolution of this compact DSLR body is 6.1 effective Megapixels and it is compatible with most Pentax interchangeable lenses, old or new. The back of the camera is equipped with a large 2-inch colour LCD display, a feature that is very convenient for the user. The display offers 210,000 pixels of resolution.

Pentax *istDS SLR camera body
The *istDS features a large, easy-to-read LCD data panel on the top panel to allow easy, at-a-glance confirmation of the camera's operational status and various settings. The dimensions of the Pentax *istDS is only 125mm (W) x 92.5mm (H) x 66mm (T) and without batteries and the small SD Flash card the weighing is about 500 grams. The *ist DS incorporates an advanced 16-segment metering system to assure high-precision light measurement, even under complicated lighting conditions. Center-weighted metering and spot metering are also available to meet specialized applications. The *ist DS features a high-speed shutter unit with a top speed of 1/4000 second and a top synchronization speed of 1/180 second to assure greater visual creativity. It records up to 8 images consecutively at a speed of approximately 2.8 frames per second, allowing the user to capture a series of the subjects action or movement.

Pentax *ist DS dSLR - SD memory card
The *istDS uses the widely available SD memory card as its storage media, not only assuring high-speed recording and readout of image data, but also contributing to the downsizing of the camera body. During the Photokina show SanDisk announced Ultra II Secure Digital cards with a storage capacity of 2GB, so the sometimes acclaimed comment that SD is not excepted enough to act as a full-grown storage medium is out of the question.
