Photokina report
The large Canon booth showcased their entire digital imaging solutions to the public. And it is impressive to see how one manufacturer like Canon is able to offer so many solutions to photographing, printing, scanning, storing, sharing, etc. Canon's series of digital cameras, especially their Digital IXUS line-up, is very popular. Some weeks ago we were invited to come to London where Canon celebrated ten years of IXUS. Imagine, ten years of IXUS (analogue and digital) resulted into 33 million sold Canon IXUS cameras.
Canon IXUS 850IS - 7.1 Megapixel digital camera
Canon's latest IXUS introduction was a series of three Digital IXUS models. Among them the new Canon Digital IXUS 850 IS. The 7.1 Megapixel Canon 850IS camera is the second and newest Optical Image Stabilized model in the IXUS line, and is now the top-of-the-line IXUS IS entry. Canon based the optical image stabilization system on advancements made in the development of the company's EF and video lenses, and then scaled it down to fit the diminutive IXUS camera profile. Unlike electronic or "digital image stabilization systems" that typically degrade image quality, Canon's lens shift-type stabilization system preserves maximum optical quality while providing up to three stops of shake correction in shutter speed equivalent.

Canon booth - IXUS 850 IS with image stabilizer
At the Canon Booth on a white round table we found a Canon IXUS 850 IS camera showing all its components. It is interesting to see how much influence the miniaturization and integration of various components have on the dimensions of a digital compact camera. Housing, shutter unit, Optical Image Stabilizer, CCD image sensor, Lens focusing unit, a main circuit board and a large LCD monitor need to fit together and a new camera is born; the Canon Digital IXUS 850 IS.
