Ihave had the Nikon Coolpix S500 digital compact camera at our office for a long time, and I have made a lot of test shots during my visit the Arch National Park in the Unites States. The new Nikon CoolPix S500 digital camera was officially introduced at the start of 2007, just before the opening of the PMA Show in Las Vegas. The Nikon Coolpix S500 offers a resolution of 7.1 effective Megapixels, an advanced in-camera image processing and a 3x optical zoom lens (range of 35-105mm on 35mm camera). The Nikon CoolPix S500 powers up in a quick 0.8 seconds and has a practically imperceptible shutter release time lag of less than 0.005 seconds. Interesting specifications packed in a very compact and solid housing and most of all fully automatic operation.

Just how comfortable a small compactcamera is in practice I experienced during some long and intensive hiking in the Arches National Park of the Utah (United States). You can take the Nikon Coolpix S500 with you without any inconvenience and use it along while you're traveling. Unfortunately Nikon did not equip the Coolpix camera with a wide-angle lens, something that would have been great to capture the wonderful nature. The in-camera image processing and its features were often a great help, especially D-lighting on high contrast situations, and is a very handy feature of the Nikon S500 camera.

Nikon CoolPix S500 Test Photos
The Nikon S500 sample images were made with a full production model, and must be assessed accordingly. The thumbnail format and large format images are shrunk in order to show them in the right size and in order to guarantee faster upload rates. The original images are the unedited images.

The new Nikon CoolPix S500 is one of the digital compact cameras nominated which will soon be tested. At the moment we are already testing a few cameras and we will publish a full test report on the Nikon Coolpix S500 as soon as we are finished with the model.
