Photokina report
One of the first things you notice is how much the Canon EOS 1000D resembles its bigger brother, the EOS 450D. The 450D is slightly bigger but that's all. If however, you take a closer look and place both models side by side, you will notice some more differences, although still marginal. The fibre of the handgrip has been changed to a somewhat rougher fibre type, and the IR sensor is lacking. This sensor supports an IR remote control which is not available on the EOS 1000D. When we turn the camera around, we notice the main difference; the size of the monitor. Whereas the EOS 450D features a large sized 3 inch monitor, the owner of an EOS 1000D has to settle for a 2.5 inch version. Still not bad at all.

Canon 1000D support
For those who are already acquainted with the EOS DSLR or a Canon compact camera, the Canon EOS 100D will not give much problems as far as operation goes. Of course, you will have to leaf through the manual for certain functions but the base is straightforward. In fact, Canon are using a familiar concept and does not deviate from the tradition. The green box for the auto mode is found quickly, the shutter release feels trustworthy beneath your finger and you're ready to shoot. The structure of the buttons is great and logical, which makes this first acquaintance a pleasant one.
Canon 1000D memory support
When word got around that the EOS 450D had made the switch from CompactFlash to Secure Digital, things went quickly from there. Canon too have adopted the Secure Digital format as standard for their EOS DSLR camera, that is to say; up to the level of the 450D. When the Canon EOS 1000D appeared it did not come as a surprise that this camera fully supports the SD format. Which means that also SDHC is supported, a type of memory card that offers a storage capacity of a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 32GB. That leaves room to travel, thanks to the huge amount of storage. And those who would like to give up their compact camera, switching to the EOS 1000D, will be able to take their SD card along with them.

Canon EOS 1000D review
The Canon EOS 1000D is Canon's convincing answer to the competition, and it again places them in the highly competitive segment of the entry-level D-SLR camera. It are only minor details that make the difference between the EOS 450D and the Canon 1000D, however, the price will have to make the real difference. The market for the entry-level digital SLR is extremely crowded and although there never used to be a question about scoring a market share in the past, it might be difficult for the upcoming years.
