Sony Ericsson W380i review

The Sony Ericsson W380i comes in a small, square box, together with several accessories. You will find a USB cable and PC Suite software to transfer files to the computer. The included headset consists of two parts that have to be connected. The part with the earplugs features a standard connection, enabling it for use with more audio devices. If you use the earplugs for the Sony Ericsson W380i, you have to plug them into the microphone part of the headset, whereupon you connect it as a whole to the mobile phone. A quick battery charger and a number of manuals are also found inside the package. An additional leaflet with information about the 'gesture control' function offers a description about this interesting, innovative function.

The Sony Ericsson W380i walkman phone comes in the following colours: Electric Purple, Magnetic Grey and Tangerine Black. The W380i is a compact clamshell model with a striking design. The housing at the bottom is slightly sloping, which makes the part at which the monitor is positioned smaller than the operation part. A design like this would not be my first choice, as it inevitably leads to a smaller monitor size. The room that remains is taken up by a 262,144 colour TFT monitor with 176 x 220 pixels. If you are used to a mobile phone with a larger monitor, the one on the W380i will probably be disappointing.

On the front side of the Sony Ericsson W380i, three music buttons are placed in the form of elevated tips. If you deactivate lock with the dedicated button on the back, you can press play / stop to start the music player or the radio. The back and forward buttons let you scroll through the music list or radio frequencies, without having to open up the clamshell phone. Each time, you will feel a small vibration and the buttons will light up as a confirmation signal. This gives you the confirmation you have pressed a button, since at first glance you would not expect these buttons to actually be what they are. Not only are the Walkman music buttons handy; they also form a nice addition to the design of the Sony Ericsson W380i cell phone.

Whilst testing the Sony Ericsson W380i walkman phone a number of important pros and cons emerged. Do not purchase this phone if you want to capture moments on a regular base with the camera function of this mobile phone. The setting possibilities are limited and the quality of the pictures rather poor. If you use your mobile phone as MP3 player, you will probably find the W380i an interesting device.
