Photokina report
Some weeks before the Photokina 2008 kicked off, the beginning of September to be precise, Sony introduced its top model of the Alpha assortment: the Sony DSLR-A900. The Sony Alpha A900 features 24.6 megapixels of resolution, a dual BIONZ processor, 5 frames per second and a built-in SteadyShot module that make the A900 a serious candidate to demand its market share in a segment that is currently dominated by Nikon and Canon. During the Photokina event, the new Sony A900 attracted a fair amount of attention. Sony offered the possibility to experience working with an A900 body and lens, with a large choice of available ZEISS lenses, to actually feel how a racing monster like this works in practice.

Even though the Sony Alpha 900 has professional features, it certainly is not a camera solely for the professional photographer. Also the advanced hobby photographer that wants to switch to semi or professional photography will probably consider the Sony A900. It is a huge step to switch from the amateur or middle segment to the A900. The price of high resolution full frame digital SLRs may have dropped since the announcement of the Sony Alpha 900, it is still a huge sum of money. However, it is more than just that. Take the housing of the A900, for instance.

The Sony DSLR-A900 comes with a Li-Ion battery that is recharged through an external battery charger. One charge takes approximately 175 minutes and a full recharge of the battery takes about 235 minutes. According to CIPA measurements, which are standardized but not necessarily have to equal practice, a fully charged battery should deliver approximately 880 pictures; however, in practice this amount will not be reached. And if you think you need longer battery life, or want it just for convenience, you can purchase a second Li-Ion battery.

Sony showed the world that it is possible to bring out an entire line-up of digital SLR cameras in a short period of time and at an immense speed. And not only that, it puts Sony ahead of the competition with certain techniques that the rivals aren't yet using. Sony takes over the lead from Canon as we solely look at the amount of Megapixels, which will be good from a marketing viewpoint. And of course, there is practice… We had the Sony DSLR-A900 in the office for a while and were able to test the camera thoroughly.
