Photokina report
Sony Alpha camera review - Photokina 2010 report - The new Sony A580 is equipped with a newly developed 16.2 Megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS censor, offers up to 7fps shooting, and Auto HDR - a feature which enables a photographer to capture shots that normally are only possible after post processing. Sony targets the A580 at photographers who wants to become better than the average compact shooter and search for new creative expressions, but are still looking for user-friendliness and easy-of-use. Another highlight is the integration of video into the series of Sony Alpha cameras. For a camcorder specialist it took them quite a while, but according to Sony there was enough reason to act in such.

The technique that previously was available and had been used by the competition was found to be inferior, at least according to Sony and therefore it was decided to wait and in the meantime develop. With the introduction of the Alpha 580, Sony claims to have used the best technique available. The Sony A580 is able to record Full HD video in 1920x1080i resolution and AVCHD format. An important difference is the performance of the AF-system during recording. This is a far more effective method. Other interesting changes with the Sony A580 are a new 15-point AF-system we also found in the Sony A55 DSLR camera. As an additional refinement, new Focus Check Live View mode simplifies critical assessment of the finest image details. A real-time ‘feed’ from the main sensor can be viewed on the LCD monitor, with switchable magnification allowing close-up confirmation of delicate manual focus adjustments.

Becoming a creative photographer has become very easy. Previous generation Alpha camera were already equipped with this feature, but Auto HDR is now refined further. Data from a burst of three frames at bracketed exposure values is automatically combined, creating a single image with extended highlight and shadow detail. Multi-frame Noise Reduction ‘stacks’ a high-speed burst of six frames, creating a single low-noise exposure that boosts effective sensitivity as high as ISO 25600.
