BlackBerry Torch review

The BlackBerry Torch sales packaging is small, and as always for BlackBerry, it is matte black. As soon as we open the packaging, the BlackBerry Torch Smartphone is found in a special cut-away. The new BlackBerry Smartphone has a very sleek design. We find about four buttons and an optical joystick underneath the touchscreen. When we slide the phone open, we also see a QWERTY-keyboard next to the touchscreen. This keyboard is comparable to that of the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and it is a bit sunken down. The back of the BlackBerry Smartphone is completely black with a logo, and on top, the lens with flash is found. The sales packaging also contains a data cable, a headset, a charger, a small CD with software and the instruction booklets.

The BlackBerry Torch Smartphone has a 5.0 megapixel digital camera. It can be started up with the quick key on the side or by choosing camera in the menu. Starting up the application takes 2 to 3 seconds, after which the whole screen functions as a viewfinder, except for a small tab with icons. The camera flash can be quickly switched on and the scene mode can be adjusted, as well displaying the photos taken. There is continuous focusing when the phone is moved, so that you can quickly capture a moment. However, this also might mean that you will miss something or get a photo that is not sharp. It may just require some getting used to. You can also turn the autofocus settings on ‘per photo’, although it then takes a bit longer before the photo is taken.

The BlackBerry menu has already been adjusted a few times, although they were mainly design adjustments, because old BlackBerry smartphones still ‘feel’ the same. Still, everything looks a lot better lately. About a year ago, the BlackBerry OS 5 was put on the phones, although the differences were minimal. Not much later, the Torch is equipped with the new BlackBerry OS 6. In the OS 6, multimedia and Social Networking play an important role, next to the standard BlackBerry Functions. If you push on the clock at the top, you get an overview of the settings related to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the cell phone network, so that they can be quickly adjusted. Just underneath of that, message indications and such are found. When you click on them, you get an overview of recent events and agenda items.

With the new BlackBerry Torch 9800, BlackBerry is introducing a cell phone for the ultimate Touch experience. This cannot be compared with the BlackBerry Storm series that was a bit a disappointing. The menu has changed in the positive sense, in terms of functionality as well as design. The search function is a nice addition. With access to Social Networking with Social Feeds and the Twitter and Facebook applications combined with diverse multimedia functionalities, the BlackBerry Torch 9800 is completely up to date.
