Digital reflex cameras attracting the greatest interest, camera phones taking over the role of an “optical notebook”, DVDs and hard disks as new storage media for camcorders, the next generation of memory cards is ready for launch and Internet enables the photography industry to utilize new forms of communication. At Photokina in 2006, the merging of the photography and video worlds with the consumer electronics, telecommunications, and information technology sectors will lead to a new level of quality, with the Photokina presenting imaging innovations in a more extensive and focused manner than that found at any other comparable trade fair. The Photokina 2006 promises to be the biggest show ever!

Manufacturers come and go, even the most famous and experienced companies have had to cope with the rapid developments of today’s digital market. Looking back, it is not that long ago since there were, for example, many camera manufacturers, yet it had already been forecast that it would be hard to keep or even gain a market share in this highly competitive market. So in the end, many of them merged with others, or simply disappeared. Some companies that are not experienced in the digital imaging world, suddenly become major players while others that had merged, took advantage of the high-tech knowledge of the companies they took over, and thus also succeeded in becoming a major player in the imaging sector. Canon was not wrong when they stated in one of their press events a couple of years ago: “We believe only a few will survive and we are one of them…”
