Besides Panasonic’s surprising news for the visitors of the Photokina show, Leica also made itself heard. Leica is a company with an excellent reputation, although you would not actually expect surprises of them. However, at the Photokina 2008, Leica presented the company as a brand with actual world fame. Who would expect Leica to present an entirely new digital camera system in addition to a twosome compact cameras (C-Lux 3 and D-Lux 4) and a somewhat dull Leica M8.2? A genuine surprise, to say the very least, and an interesting new development for the professional photography market. The Leica S2 is a much larger format system camera than the usual Leica assortment, and the camera features a gigantic sensor sized 30 x 45mm.

Leica S2

Due to a leak on the Internet we got our hands on some information about a new Leica SLR camera. And it not only concerns a new SLR, it includes a brand-new digital photographic system as well, the Leica S-system. The Leica S2 will be the first DSLR camera in the new S-system, boosting 37 Megapixel of resolution.

Leica rangefinder M8.2 camera

The new Leica M8.2 is a significant development of Leica Camera AG’s German-made digital rangefinder camera for professionals. While important Leica M8 attributes such as discretion, intuitive work and robustness have been further improved, the new model retains the key characteristics of the Leica reportage camera such as the compact shape, the exceptional image quality in connection with Leica M lenses and the unique picture composition with the Leica rangefinder that show it to be a genuine M camera. The Leica M8.2 camera complements the Leica M8, and many elements of the Leica M8.2 can be integrated into the M8 if desired.

Leica D-LUX 4

The Leica D-LUX 4 introduced by Leica Camera AG, Solms is a compact digital camera with powerful optics and a comprehensive range of settings. What’s new about this camera is the wide range of accessories for additionally widening its photographic potential, offering the sophisticated user even more possibilities for creative photography. With its 1/1.63“ CCD image sensor, which is unusually large for this class of camera, the Leica D-LUX 4 produces images of superlative quality. The Leica D-LUX 4 sports a high-speed Leica DC VARIO-SUMMICRON 5.1-12.8 mm f/2.0-2.8 ASPH lens with a focal length range of 24 to 60 mm in 35 mm format. The Leica D-LUX 4 will be available in a black finish at Leica stockists‘ from October 2008.

Leica interview

One of the surprises of the Photokina 2006 was Leica. And beside an interesting introduction of the compact camera series, and a digital SLR camera Leica unveiled their digital M camera; the Leica M8. The Leica M8 offers a resolution of 10.3 megapixels and incorporates a notably low-noise CCD image sensor has been rigorously optimized for the special features of the Leica M lens system. The special design of the viewfinder camera with no mirror box allows the typically compact and flat shape of the Leica M to be retained. The small focal length extension factor of 1.33 enables creative freedom even in digital Leica M Photography. We discussed the new Leica M8 with Michael Agel, Press + Public relations of Leica.

Leica D SUMMILUX 25mm ASPH lens

During our meeting with mister Suguru Takamatsu, Coordi-nator Marketing Team Overseas Sales & Marketing Group and Ichiro Kitao, Product Planning Manager, from Panasonic we had a little hands-on with the new Leica D SUMMILUX 25mm f1.4 ASPH lens. The new Leica lens incorporates a large total large total of 10 lens elements in 9 groups, including a large-diameter aspherical lens. The bright standard f/1.4 lens provides a superb high-quality optical performance. The large diameter front lens ensures sufficient peripheral light levels, and a large-diameter front aspherical lens reduces light degradation all the way to the lens periphery. The result is high resolution and absolutely minimum lens distortion.

Leica Tri-Elmar-M 16-21mm ASPH lens

Leica Camera AG, Solms is exhibiting the new Leica Tri-Elmar-M 1:4/16-18-21 mm ASPH. at photokina in Cologne. The Leica Tri-Elmar-M 1:4/16-18-21 mm ASPH is the first Leica super-wide-angle lens with a 16 millimetre focal length for the Leica ranging viewfinder system. In conjunction with the two fixed focal lengths of 18 and 21 mm, it combines a total of three extremely wide-angle perspectives and is thus very well suited for highly demanding work such as architectural photography or reportage. The use of two aspherical lenses permits a notably compact design of the lens and ensures high imaging capability over the entire focal length and focussing range.
